Re: [RC] FIRE! - David & Maggie

Scott and Ginger,
Thank God you are OK. Our best to you while you rebuild your lives.

To Ridecampers,
David and I are both firefighters and paramedics. DO check your fireplaces
and woodstoves. This is where most housefires start. Also, don't ever leave
a spaceheater unattended, even the kind that are supposed to be safe. Have
your furnace cleaned every year and change the filter often.

Clean the range hood. There is an awful lot of grease accumulating up there,
just waiting to ignite.

And smokers!! I won't even start. A cigarette can smolder for days (YES,
DAYS) in a sofa.

Have an evacuation plan. Include the pets. We have cat carriers and leashes
next to the front door.

If you don't have 911 service in your area, know the numbers by heart, or
preprogram them into your phone. Don't count on being able to look them up,
or be able to read them off of your noteboard next to the phone in the room
that is on fire.

And firefighters aren't heroes for going into burning buildings. The bravest
thing a firefighter ever does is take the oath. After that, it's all just
'line of duty'.

Stay safe,
Maggie Pritchard
David Herlensky
