Re: [RC] Calm & Cool - heidi

Calm & Cool contains valerian root (yes, and herbal) that
has as its active ingredient L-tryptophan, which is
forbidden not only in endurance competition but also USAE
competition (whose drug rules are somewhat laxer than the
AERC's drug rule).

Yes, it can test positive.

Before the handy-dandy days of injections and pills, pharmacology was a
rather inexact matter of taking plants known to have pharmacological
effects and trying to dose them in such a way that the patient got enough
to work but not so much as to be harmful. The medicine men and women of
primitive cultures looked at a field of plants just about like a modern
druggist looks at his shelf. The concept that just because the plant is
growing out there "naturally" it is not a drug, is pretty naive.

Thanks for the one pharmacological detail on C&C, kat. If such remedies
did not contain pharmacologically active plants (herbs, if you will), they
wouldn't have the desired effects.

Heidi
