Re: [RC] Heat & humidity - Diane

Hi, I live in Florida, & I try to ride either very early, or late. I wet
my horse down before I ride, & take every
opportunity to get him wet while riding him. Electrolytes
are given in the summer + I put salt in his food, a tablespoon full, to make
sure he drinks enough. Also I will ride in the rain, (as long as there is no
lighting.).
Also I have a Arab, & they are desert bred so I think they can take the
heat better. He never gets a winter coat, so if it gets down to 50% I have
to blanket him. And oh
the fly spray I go through. Hey I get a good tan though. lol,
Diane & Brazz

Subject: [RC] Heat & humidity

So, how do you folks in the Carolinas, GA, TX, and other hot and humid
states condition during the summer?

Slowly, morning & evening (I know the humidity is up in the morning but
there ought to be a "direct sunlight
index". Sponge, give electrolytes or let them eat some. Avoid letting
the core heat build up.

Are there very many summer rides in these humid states?

A few. They're pretty miserable. This weekend is Dawson Forest which is a
good example of a summer ride. They have good river crossings for thorough
cooling.

Well, guess that means I shouldn't be riding now but that would only
leave me about 4 months in the whole year to ride

My biggest goal is to keep the core heat down. Walk up hills. If the
trail goes in and out of the sun trot the sun, walk the shade to prolong
time in shade. I think you can go too slow though and be out there too long.
:-P If the horse feels extremely hot to the touch...stay in the water for
some time and get that temp back down.

Angie
