Re: [RC] stifle locking problem - Maggie Mieske

One of our better horse vets in Michigan suggested placing posts around my
sister's mare's pasture when her stifles started locking up....she put them
in several places before the water trough and where her feeding spot was and
in a month or two of having to lift those legs up over and over and over
every day, she ended up never needing the surgery that another not so horsey
vet prescribed. :) Thank God for horse vets who come up with practical and
affordable solutions!!! :)
Miles of smiles,
Maggie

Is anyone familiar with stifle locking on a horse? A friend's gelding
was just sent to a trainer and the trainer said the horse's stifle locks
up. My friend is at a loss at what this means or what to do. A vet
suggested iodine shots. (??) Is this something that will cause problems
down the road? Can a horse get over it with better condiditoning?>>

Lots of slow conditioning will also tighten up the ligaments involved, and
are (obviously) a better option to try before injecting the joint, or
surgery.
