Re: [RC] When to electrolyte - heidi sowards

I would like to know the answer to this as well, this past
weekend Ash and I completed the 30 mile ride at Santiam
Cascade, middle of the pack, all A's on the finish!!!
Anyhow, the night before, I electrolyted and the morning of
the trailer ride I did also. By the time we got to the
ridecamp, 4+ hour trailer ride (offered water during a
break but didn't drink) he had diarrhea. Gave him 2-3 hours
to relax, eat, drink (which he did) while we set up camp.
Saw the vet for our check on Friday evening (Dr. Sears) and
he vetted in with all A's but what he called hyperacative
gut sounds and told me that possibly my electrolyte
protocol was too much for this horse, that the electrolytes
could have been overdone and are now taking the fluids out
of the horse. (Now I start to worry!) I don't electrolyte
him that night or the ride morning as he still has cow pie
stools. First loop was 20 miles, 3 water stops which he
drank at all of them, I also let him grab bites to eat
after the first 7 miles. He was hungry, but would not touch
a carrot, in fact wouldn't touch one since arriving at RC.
(This horse generally eats anything!!!) At our vet check/30
min. hold we saw Dr. Foss and I commented about the
diarrhea and how we had withheld electrolytes for that
morning and he said, THAT was the problem causing the
diarrhea. (Opposite of what the first vet said.) Told me to
get more electrolytes into him, which I did. He ate and
drank great during the hold (still no carrots). On the 10
mile loop he drank great and ate when I asked him to and I
also carried a small bag of hay that was wet and I had him
stop and eat a bite whenever it was rocky and we were
walking. Like I said, he vetted in with all A's and ate
like a trooper at the end. By the end of the day was eating
carrots again.

heidi and Ash (with the long mane/everyone thought I was a
girl and a mustang or paso fino or morgan! No, I'm an arab
and I am a boy!!!)

Hi,

I have been looking through the archives and did not see
my exact question
addressed (if it is I missed it - sorry).

I wanted to find out how riders judge when to electrolyte
their horses on
the trail and when travelling. I don't want to do it at
the wrong time
and cause further problems by adding salt to their
systems, but do need to
give some on trail as one of my horses sweats a lot.

Also, when trailering, do you give the night before you
go, hours before
you leave, as you load, and why?
Thanks in advance,
Benedikte
