You are not going to trim the inserts but place them along the sides of the Old Macs where here feet are not round enough yet. Take the time to place them right and just leave them there until her feet don't need them anymore. The inserts are not bad to deal with. TheyVelcroover the side of the boot to take up the space if your horses foot is not round. It is very important to fill the space in the boots so that the strap does not rub. I have used the inserts one side of the boot if I am working on a problem foot and one side is flatter than the other. I putmyinserts where I want them and they don't move even taking the boots on and off. If you have any question on the fit take a piece of cardboard orstiffpaper and trace your horses feet then just slide them into the boot. You can see what kind of space you will have on the sides. If you have any other questions just give me a yell.
