[RC] problem with 4 yr old - sharp penny

I agree with Joni, but after ruling out pain, then look
to your self and her training thus far. First of all it
sounds like her "go" button is "stuck".
Before heading out on the trail make sure it is firmly in
place at home. I really like the "squeeze, cluck and
spank"
method Clinton Anderson advocates. My guy, Reno, was an
extremely ring sour dressage horse I was able to pick up
very cheap for his calibur of training. When I used any
leg
he would do as your filly is doing. Now all I have to do
is
lightly squeeze and he is right there. In the beginning
when I started spanking after the click/or kiss, he threw
a
major temper tantrum....the thing is, you have to
continue
RYTHMICALLY spanking at the same rate and and force
(intensitivity of the spank) all the while your horse is
having the temper tantrum or doing whater he is doing
instead of going forward.(kicking out or bucking and
going
forward is NOT accepted) Stop only when you get one step
of
forward movement. When forward movement stops again, go
back to asking with a squeeze...if its ignored then a
couple of clucks, then if still no forward movement,
start
spanking with rythem first lightly then with increasing
firmness until you get that forward movement. I like
riding
a young horse or a horse I'm schooling with mecate reins
attached to the snaffle so my spanker is always handy!)

Another thing is you may want to look to yourself. Alot
of people continue to cluck or leg a horse after the
horse
gives them some forward movement. Squeeze and when you
get
forward movement STOP squeezing. Don't anticapate the
ceasing of forward movement...wait til the horse actually
stops or changes gait then squeeze again. Otherwise you
are
nagging at your horse all the time and eventually your
horse will tune you out cause she knows your application
of
aids are meaningless. It's a habit that is very easy to
get
into and very hard to break of onesself. At times I still
find myself wanting to nag with my legs cause I think he
is
"fixin'" to stop or slow down. This is one case you never
want to ride ahead of your horses movement.

 Just some thoughts to consider.

Regards,
Penny

She is usually a very brave, forward moving horse.
I
use a D-ring
snaffle on her. The last couple of rides she refuses
to
go and starts to
back up, when I make her circle to go forward she
eventually starts to
buck.<<<

Check for things that could be pain
related.......teeth,
saddle fit, sore
muscles etc. Rule out pain, before assuming it is her
"mind".
