[RC] [Guest] Snakes on Trail - Ridecamp Guest

Sheila Larsen Sheila_Larsen@xxxxxxx

Ok, some might be a little odd because I really like snakes and am a
herpotologist specializing in snakes. If you live in the land of
rattlesnakes like I do, you do want to take precautions. If you are
concerned about rattlesnake bites, then ride with splint boots, bell boots
and boots behind. That should cover up most of the available places a snake
would bite when you are out riding. But in general if you leave them alone
they will leave you alone. I remember as a teenager, cantering right over
the top of a rattlesnake coiled in the trail. Also remember that
rattlesnakes are not fast movers so if they are crossing the trail they
typically don't move quickly so give the time and a wide berth. Obviously
some of this is just common sense. Snakes and poison oak are one of the
reasons why I ride with a dressage whip. I can push both out of the way
with it. Of course, I am just as likely to pick up the snake but a big
gopher snake can give a could bite too. Hope this helps.
