[RC] old endurance races - Jonni JewellWhile up at Tevis, we went shopping at the antique stores. A magazine caught my eye. It is a copy of "The West; true stories of the old west", April, 1968. One of the stories is titled: "The fabulous cowboy race". Of course, the magazine was a must have item. The brief rundown of the story is the race was 900 miles, from Chadron Nebraska to Buffalo Bill Cody's exhibit at the World's fair in Chicago, 1893. They had weight requirements. A western stock saddle must be used, and weigh no less than 35 pounds. Riders and tack must weigh not less than 150 pounds. They could use no more than 2 horses, who must be western bred and raised. Oh, and the Humane Society had objections, but after stationing themselves along the route, withdrew their objections. It is an interesting read, and I have not researched it at all, to see if there is anything else available on this race. I will try to scan the story, and see if I can post it somewhere, and still be able to read the scanned print.
