[RC] Upcoming Fast Horse Movies - Lynne Glazer

I'm always rather interested as well as stunned when Hollywood decides to create a movie around horses--we haven't had that many in recent years since the fabulous original Black Stallion film (and its awful sequel), and Black Beauty. There have been supporting horse actors, as in Dances With Wolves, the horse in the animated Beauty and the Beast, El Dorado and of course the terrific Lord of the Rings trilogy. Last year we had Spirit, Stallion (uh, gelding if you look closely) of the Cimmaron, with human eyes but pretty good horse movement.

I thought Spirit (DreamWorks) was one of *three* horse-centered movies in pretty close succession--with the long-awaited Seabiscuit (Universal) due next, 7/25, and then the fall's Hidalgo (Touchstone/Disney). New news is that the latter has been moved to early March release, with much speculation as to the reason why--is it the true story vs. hoax controversy? The lead actor's other movie's release schedule? Movie too long, back to the editing suite?

Well, there's a 4th speedy horse movie coming out--"The Young Black Stallion". Which studio, pray tell? None other than Walt Disney Pictures. And gosh, if it doesn't feature a desert race, looks more like a sprint/marathon than an endurance race. The trailer's final frame says "September 2003 release", but the website says December 25th (large format/iMax only). Their first film exclusively for the big screen. A Horse and His...Girl!

What a feast for the horse-crazy.

Lynne
