[RC] Melting Ulcer in eye? - spiritwood@xxxxxxxxx

Hi ridecampers,
I currently have a 2 week old foal out of my daughter's endurance horse.
Day before yesterday the baby was found to have her left eyelid puffy and
was unhappy to have it pulled open in order to see the eye. Couldn't get a
good look as it was after dark so planned to get a good look next day when
I only worked 1/2 day. Came home, checked baby's eye and found it now open
but very irritated sclera and large (4mm) white bulging area in the center.
Baby has vision in the eye but vet called to come check. Vet came and
immediatly referred to (sort of)local equine clinic for assessment and
possible surgery for a "conjunctival flap". I'm told baby probably
bumped/poked/irritated eye and either a bacteria or fungus was introduced
that has caused her "aggressive melting ulcer", as it is now diagnosed.
Mom and baby now at equine clinic with cultures and slides done last night
and aggressive treatment with broad spectrum antibiotics and atropine
started immediatly. Awaiting outcome of slide analysis/culture growth for
prognosis. Help! Any information on what might hav caused this unusual
condition? I'm told that only about 1% of eye injuries lead to something
like this. Very unusual!
