RE: [RC] [Guest] Tripping and saddle fit (long) - McGann, Barb

Absolutely the back pain could cause extreme stumbling. We had a young horse
(7) doing this same thing this spring. We took him to the chiropractor and he
had definite problems in his withers area/along with some involvement in his
neck. After one treatment, he was moving much better, and after a second
treatment, he is not stumbling at all. Its really amazing to me how many times
you can trace problems like this and even poor behavior (head tossing, rearing,
etc) to some sort of pain!

Hi, I love this form and all the great information. I have a little 14.2
Arab that I have had about 6 months. When I got him he was way under weight
and now is fat and sassy. I ride him hard, probably 10 to 15 miles 3 or 4
days a week in steep rocky terrane. I have his feet done regularly and
working on shortening his toe and getting some he. Just recently (about the
last 6 weeks) he has started to stumble and trip very badly and its getting
worse. It happens in all gaits, in all terrane, not going down hill so bad
though. Last night we were just heading out and walking across the pavement
he tripped and fell to his knees and walked on them for a while before he
could get his balance. He skinned his knee very badly and it scared me
pretty good also. I am wondering if this could be caused by back (wither)
pain. His stride is starting to get choppy and although he has good sweat
pattern he has wavy hair on both sides of his withers. I ride in a fabton
saddle with semi qt horse bars and I dont know what to try next as far as
saddle size. He is not very wide and has nice withers but his back is
pretty long. Does anyone have any advice. Do you think a sore back could be
causing all the tripping? I was thinking of lunging him over cavelety and
riding in a bare back pad for a while. Please any advice would be great...
