[RC] lost control - Ed Kilpatrick

hi linda, your horse is just doing what a lot of other horses do, running with the herd. and when the herd is running, each horse probably thinks something is coming after them trying to EAT them.  the tip that allegra mentioned about turning the horse sideways is a step in the right direction.  but it is better to teach the horse how to flex his head to each side with a halter, on the ground, before you do this from the saddle, in order to prevent a wreck.  one of the best sources to learn this technique is the clinton anderson tapes, "lunging for respect", and also the "riding with confidence" series. these tapes are worth the money and will really help you.  a lot of work in the arena or round pen, under saddle, doing one rein stops will help you get the kind of control you are looking for.  it takes time, patience, and lots of repititions.  and no, turning the horse around and going back into the other riders is not a good idea.  instead, get off the horse and off the trail until you can get control.  let all the other horses get out of sight if you need to.  it is not worth getting hurt!  ed
