RE: [RC] horse fatalities, 2002 - Bob Morris

Steph:

You state <<<There may still be room for improvement, but I
don't think we need to
ask more of the veterinary committee.>>>

If not the Vet Committee then what committee. If it is not
the vet committee, then you can be sure they will distance
themselves from any action made by others. The history of
this committee, and I say committee as I do not fault any
individual, is deplorable. How many times in the past was
direction given by the Board in the form of motions
regarding equine problems reporting? Many as you are well
aware of. How many years did it take for the Vet Committee
to produce an up to date handbook (1982/1999) and it needs
another going over now.

If we are to be active in our effort to reduce horse
fatalities we must look into all aspects of what occurs when
one occurs. But then as was categorically stated in all
cases reported "No specific management or veterinary
circumstances have been identified that may have prevented
this fatality". This has established a record, a broken
record! (Oh, do you remember what records were? MP3 has
replaced them)

Bob - Maybe what you (and Jim and others) are suggesting
that AERC needs, is
an investigation, or analysis, that goes beyond the scope of
the Veterinary
committee? It seems that the depth of information that you
would like to see
includes factors beyond the veterinary accessment of the
situation. I don't
think it's reasonable for a veterinary fatality report to be
required to
include information on trail safety conditions, stabling
conditions, or even
weather conditions. Yet possibly this is important
information.

It will be interesting to see what the Horse Welfare
committee comes up
with. There may still be room for improvement, but I don't
think we need to
ask more of the veterinary committee.
