Re: [RC] Riding Arabs - Lynne Glazer

ROFLMAO. Practice, baby, practice. And I know this from experience!

If you remember Tori's stories last year about the Rubberband, well, yesterday he did his first ride, an LD at Cincuentos Anos. Not only did we finish with a ton of horse left, but at the completion check the vets said he was one of the best looking horses they'd seen all day, so now he has to do another one next week, then that's it until I am fit enough to go back to 50s.

He's been on trail for a year, under saddle with a lot of arena work (not by me! <g>) since late in his 3 yr old year. He never got taught a rollback, I'm not sure I'd want my young horse to know cues to do that under saddle! I did all of his trail "training".

Anyway, we had some exciting moments which entertained other riders and spectators, but our partnership prevailed--the trust and confidence we'd built up with each other, and I am further along with him at 6 than I am with my experienced 12 year old Ember (who is now pregnant with a half Lippizan child). I did buy him at 5 months old, but trust on the ground is "different" than trust under saddle, and it took a while to develop, when his proclivity is to fly. He shied only once, at a limed spot across a trail, pretty neat.

So, my prescription is for wet saddle blankets on safe trails for a while, and a saddle with some security--and it's very important IMHO that you get your saddle balanced, so that you don't feel like you're downhill. If you're not in balance, she won't be either.

regards,
Lynne

Trainer said "now I know you can ride...I've seen you before...but you didn't look like you could just now." My confidence is shaken. How the heck am I going to ride this mare on the trial with 50 other horse? Trainer said I will get used to her...and once I do I won't want to ride any other horse.

Can anyone relate?
