Most people don't take the time to fit them properly (they have shims to shim the inside if they're a tad too big). Also, I found that using a heavy, wool, hiking sock would keep them on Kurt's horse (who regularly threw them before using the socks). The horse may also have had an imbalanced hoof that caused him to overstep. Cutting the toe out of the Swiss Boots enhances the breakover and stops the boot from interfering with breakover so much.
