Re: [RC] Blk Walnut trees poisionous to horses? - TypefI worried about the Oleander leaves that flank our long driveway that were planted by my neighbor and were huge, full-grown plants when our house was built. The corral is only separated by maybe 12 feet from the Oleander row. In the winter, some leaves do blow in our corral but the horses ignore them. I think they would have to be pretty hungry to eat them because they must not taste or smell good or something because they don't touch them. I know they're supposed to be poisonous to horses but they haven't caused me any problems YET in 14 years. If I could pull them, out I would for sure! The neighbor is pretty good about hiring a cutter to come in and swoop down the row and chop them down, but then I gotta clean 'em up! ----- Original Message ----- From: "Sullivan" <greymare@xxxxxxx> To: <ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; <drhopkins@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Saturday, January 11, 2003 5:05 PM Subject: Re: [RC] Blk Walnut trees poisionous to horses? I have heard the shavings are toxic when used as bedding. Frankly, my horses have lived for 12 years smack in the middle of a walnut orchard (English grafted into Black). We do get shoots from the Black bottom parts that leaf out. I would think there would be more risk from them eating the walnuts; I try to get them picked up in the areas where the horses are...and in the pasture, but there are always some walnuts left...oh well, never had a problem with it at all! We had a donkey for two years, never any problems with them either. Frankly I would worry more about all the folks that landscape with Oleander, where the leaves blow into the paddocks or the horses can reach over a fence and eat them...much more poisonous. Day we moved in here I happily yanked out about 20 Oleander. Hate the stuff.
