I have heard the shavings are toxic when used as bedding.  Frankly, my
horses have lived for 12 years smack in the middle of a walnut orchard
(English grafted into Black).  We do get shoots from the Black bottom parts
that leaf out.  I would think there would be more risk from them eating the
walnuts; I try to get them picked up in the areas where the horses are...and
in the pasture, but there are always some walnuts left...oh well, never had
a problem with it at all!  We had a donkey for two years, never any problems
with them either.

Frankly I would worry more about all the folks that landscape with Oleander,
where the leaves blow into the paddocks or the horses can reach over a fence
and eat them...much more poisonous. Day we moved in here I happily yanked
out about 20 Oleander. Hate the stuff.
