Re: [RC] [RC] riding in heat - Laurie Durgin

I used to wear cotton, but got to trying lycra tights and coolmax or dri-weave, type shirts at sporting goods stores, Nike makes alot, they all have tags saying they transport the sweat from inside out, they ususally have an 'interesting weave"(I sew). They are very pricey (in horse catalogs Roma makes some and other companys are following suit. Ariat, etc. Now I don't have 50-65. $ for a shirt. But I do peruse "Marshalls"and clearance sales. I now have 4 or 5 "cool" shirts, I paid from 4.00$ to about 15.00$ and I look year round. They are in the spoortswear or activewear ailse. Ususally they are "biking" shirts , tennis or running shirts".I ride alot in summer in 80-90's in 60-90'% humidity. I carry partlly frozen water bottles and these shirts are "much ,much, much' more comfortable than cotton, which gets soggy and stays soggy.I didn't believe it about lycra tights, till I made/bought, some and found the same thing. Cotton now feels "clammy " to me.I just recently found a Nike long sleeve white dri weave (it had been 45$ I got it for 15.)0)., and plan on trying it summer and winter(great under polar fabric, get the sweat off of you )l. I believe on line you could try "campmor" and other camping/hiking catalogs , look for clearance off season or last years style. (ladies only:I found the same thing in sports bras, cotton is clammy, but the activewear, jogging bras are much more comfortable.)
Laurie /onehanded(but I can type, now nd sew a bit, riding next week I hope, stiches out next tues. then I have to Pad it ??? dr. said. right in the curve of my thumb to index finger:{ . Rascal better be good!!!!! Ha,ha,ha,ha,ha,ha.

There is no evaporation when you are in high humidity, which is the
biggest problem. In fact, putting water on and leaving it on during high
humidity can exacerbate the problem, as the water absorbs the warmth from
sunlight and actually insulates the skin, causing higher temperatures
rather than cooler.

Water only helps in hot humid conditions when it is either (1) cold and/or
(2) poured on and scraped off quickly. A wet scarf around the neck is
*miserable* in humid weather, except for the first 5 minutes after it
comes out of the icechest.

I find that wearing an overly large, white shirt is the coolest for my
body, because the white reflects sunlight and there is plenty of space for
air to move around inside the shirt (especially at a fast trot or canter).
I buy men's tall size t-shirts and polo shirts from Lands' End for riding,
because they have longer sleeves, so even short sleeves come nearly to my
wrists, but the sleeves are very wide for airflow and no cuffs or elastic
to itch or bind.
