Re: [RC] [RC] Help, I'm tired of my spooking Horse - Laurie Durgin

Waaallll, Rascal used to do the "drop shoulder thing" when we first got him, he was green broke(my estimate he was rushed a bit, as he threw a barrel racer and they put a strong bit on him (ah, reared too) but I didn't know that. They were trying to back him for a large owner.(all women, but they ash, "missed" some steps. I think he "dropped shoulder" cause it "worked", and he didn't have to do anything more drastic.
He also spun at a serious surprise.Used if for real fear(aka. 8 ft pine brach falling out of sky), but, he also did it when he wanted to go home, fast ussually.
What I have done.
Got some training tapes, went to a clinic(john lyons, got his books. Read other training books , talked to everyone, then wadeded thru the info.
I make him face a spook, not allow him to turn away and flee. If I can I get him "busy" doing circles to circle past it or some other manuver to try to ignore it. As a last resort(narrow trail) I dismount and lead past it "muttering, It's just a rock , like it's going to eat you "
For spinning, and bolting I make him do circles till he decides to listen,("you want to move , we'll move, but where I say") I make him do something, anything (aka. John lyons).I also reverse till he walks if the tries to bolt for home or do half-halts. this when he is jigging and I want a walk.
De-spook training helps(again I used John Lyons on my mare first, Rascal has had some of this, though not enough.
I reccommend John Lyons "trail tapes" they aren't as expensive and have the basics of this kind of thing, if you already know a bit. He also talks about separateding horses, on those tapes .Shows how to solve ,barn sour, buddy sour behavior.(Listening Howard?) Laurie and Rascal (if this doesn't work I've tried other things , but this has worked for "Ratboy" slowly, taken some time, he still "tries " me

Hello,

I am new to the sport of endurance riding and a first
time horse owner. I am really getting tired of my 13
year old Arab Gelding(Who I really love and would
never want to get rid of) spooking. He drops his
shoulder and bolts back to the barn. I have fallen
twice and want to avoid another fall. What can I do
to help him get over this?

JDM
