Re: [RC] Poor Renegade - Barbara McCrary

You can say THAT again. When someone yells "bees!" just get OUT, FAST. Or
if no one is ahead of you, do as Steve says, just GO! I was in the lead of
a group of about 8 riders when my horse hit a nest of very angry
yellowjackets. One second I was perfectly relaxed, and the next second I
was airborne. The horse bucked me right over his head and I landed on my
back on the edge of a mountain trail at the point where it broke over on the
downhill side. I broke two ribs and possibly cracked two vertebrae.
Anyway, instead of spending a nice day riding, I spent it in emergency care
at the nearest medical facility, having X-rays. I have never been able to
make myself go back to that trail again, although that is totally
irrational. The miserable YJs are everywhere in the ground during summer
nesting time. It just pays to be ready for a fast ride out of the area. It
also pays to be on a more sensible horse, but one never knows how each horse
is going to react.

I once owned a fabulous horse named Sierra Fadwah's Renegade. He is one
of the strongest horse I have ever had. Thank you Jackie B.
One time riding him with friends in a Santa Cruz park we got into a nest
of yellow jackets. It was on a hill side and they unloaded all of us and
took off through the brush, trying to brush off the critters. We
finally got them back and continued on, though Renegade kept tossing his
head uncharacteristically.
Back at the ranch while untacking him there was a yellow jacket, still
attached to his face. Yeow! Poor guy, he put up with so much from
me..... he has a great life now though, on 60 acres of grass overlooking
the Monterey Bay, and getting out 3-4 times a week on trail rides. Hey,
I want that life!
One thing I have solidly learned. Anytime my horse or the horses around
me start REALLY swishing their tails and anyone bucks, I don't even look
around or stop. I TAKE OFF. Get out of there and look later.
Steve
