[RC] Synthetic shoes - Stagg_Newman

Subject: [RC] Synthetic Shoes

Am considering going with a synthetic shoe for my mare
to help reduce concussion to her legs and joints. Do
not feel steel shoes are the way to go at all and to
this point we have gone barefoot.
Want to know what your thoughts are regarding the
Equi-Flex and Ground Control horseshoes? Are there any
other brands out there?
TIA,
Val

Currently we are using Equiflex and thus far are pleased.

Seems to give our 20 year old, Drubin, the extra protection from concussion
he needs after all his 100s.

Jayel Super developed a quarter crack on the Vermont 100 last spring
wearing aluminum shoes. Vermont drit roads in summer may as well
be macadam and lots of up and down and thus poounding. We tried
aluminum as a way to absorb some of the concussion. Did not work.

So after 6 months off from endurance to rebuild the hoof, we have brought
Super back using Equiflex. Is working well in training on trails with
rock.
Last weekend he did the 55 both days at Sand Hills Stampede ride. After
easy first day (tie for like 33rd), on the second day
we were is a well orchestrated 4-way tie for second and Super got BC. :>)
So shoes are working thus far but as the name of the ride implies, the
footing was sandy.
Current plan is to use them in Biltmore 100 and Old Dominion 100
which will really tell the story.

Have used Equithotics in the past on a couple of our horses. Drubin
was using them when he got second in Vt. in '99 as a 16 year old and
they worked well there. However Equithotics get very slippery in
grass and mud. So best used or rides that are only on dirt roads
and pavement or similar terrrain.
