[RC] "German" martingales - CMNewell

I do recomend using a German Martingale. They are much differnt than a running martingale. If any of you have noticed the Germans do rather well in Dressage

Calling something German doesn't either make it German or mean that it is used by Germans.
The piece of equipment to which you refer is also known as a "Market-Harborough" and an "Olympic martingale".

As for its purported use by German dressage trainers, I would suspect that it is rarely, if ever, employed by any competent dressage trainer, German or otherwise.

Yes, the device has its uses, but IMHO it is one of those things that you might use on one horse for a limited time to help fix a problem, then hang it up and not use it again for years. Certainly not one of those things that is a standard item of training gear.
And I agree it is less severe, in general, than draw reins.

No; I am not a total purist. I own a set of draw reins. I used them on a horse for a couple of weeks about 20 years ago, for about 20 minutes at a pop.
Now I take them down from the hook they hang on and oil them occasionally.
