RE: [RC] - Jackie Winkleman

I have a mare that I don't tie in the trailer (as long
as she is the only one in there). She does just fine.
She stands backwards or too either side (so she can
see what is going on). She moves around some so she
doesn't stiffen up.
I would tie her if I had a divider because I would
just worry that she would try to turn around (and
there's obviously not enough room).
Even when she is not tied, she seems to keep her
balance. Their are times when you just have to hit
your brakes hard, she has done ok hauling either way.

I also know some people who only haul horses loaded
backwards for that reason. If you have to hit the
brakes hard, or ar in a fender bender, it is the
horse's butt that hits instead of their head.

A friend of mine has a 2 horse stock-type slant. She
hauls one backwards, and the other forwards. For some
reason they are more comfy like that. They can see
each other is the reason she says they prefer being
hauled that way.

There's a whole lot of different things to try to see
what works for you and your horses.

Jackie:)

I also have removed the divider from my 2 horse
trailer and trailer just the
one horse. I have always wondered if I should not
tie her head. She
trailers pretty calmly with just a bit of movement
once in a while. What
have been folks experiences with NOT tying their
heads? I have a feeling if
left to her own devices she would stand backwards.

Alison,

Slant load trailer lameness is not caused by horses
slamming
into the sidewalls. It is caused because the horse
is standing
such that the weight is more on one diagonal than
the other
for the entire trip. Thus they stay more tense on
one
side and come off the trailer with a uneven gait.
Usually they
will work out of it after lunging but why cause this
is the first
place.

BTW when we have a single horse in a trailer we turn
the horse loose.
We have have observed the horse standing straight
forward and straight
backward but never at an angle. So maybe the horse
is telling us
what is most comfortable.

Which is mostly driver error. If "you" are slamming
your horse into the
sidewalls, "you" are stopping and starting too fast.
 That's the
collective "you" and not Stagg personally.

BTW I personally do not like slant loads as too many
vets have told
me they have seen horses coming to rides with "slant
horse trailer
lameness. So even though we bought a slant load, we
removed
the dividers ....
