Re: [RC] [RC] - Truman Prevatt

I think this really depends on the horse. I took the divider out of our trailer and watched how our horses would stand when we trailered one at a time and they had room to chose. Both the ones we are currently riding will back their butts in to the corner for support and stand slanted. Some people report their horses would turn around and stand facing the back either diagonally or stright front to back.

I've pulled a long way in a slant load, FL to Utah in '96, FL to CO in '97 and FL to Northern Idaho in '01 not to mention to SE rides and we've never (knock on wood) had a problem with it bothering a horse. So I think every horse must have a preference on this. I would also not discount the driver in anything having to do with trailering.

Alison,

Slant load trailer lameness is not caused by horses slamming
into the sidewalls. It is caused because the horse is standing
such that the weight is more on one diagonal than the other
for the entire trip. Thus they stay more tense on one
side and come off the trailer with a uneven gait. Usually they
will work out of it after lunging but why cause this is the first
place.

BTW when we have a single horse in a trailer we turn the horse loose.
We have have observed the horse standing straight forward and straight
backward but never at an angle. So maybe the horse is telling us
what is most comfortable.
