Re: [RC] White hairs on body - OT - Susan Garlinghouse

As previously discussed, the white hairs are from roaning or injury, and
aren't due to a deficiency. Long-standing, chronic protein deficiencies
will cause dark hairs to get a sort of bleached, sunburned look, with a curl
to the hair and will be very brittle (thus the harsh hair coat). Mineral
deficiencies or toxicities can cause hair loss, brittleness, etc, but won't
cause white hairs. In sheep, copper deficiencies can cause bleaching around
the eyes, giving them a sort of goggle-eyed look, but that syndrome doesn't
occur in horses.

Please reply to list. My chestnut Arab mare has exactly the same and I
suspect a deficiency of something or too much of something else, but
have no way to check.

If all else fails, ask the experts!

I've done searches on all my known vet sites and also on Google, but
can't seem to find the answer. Cindy has the same problem and seems
to remember that it might have something to do with an excess /
shortage of something in the diet.

I have a 26 month old dark bay Arab colt who has some white hairs on
his sides starting behind his elbow, where the hairs change direction
(flank) and some on his haunches. They don't extend as far as the top
of the back and the hairs are evenly spaced - not clumped together and
not spots. There are no white hairs on his head, face, neck or legs.

Nothing has changed in his diet and not one of the other coloured
horses have the same white hairs - 2 chestnuts, 1 dark chestnut, 1
light bay - different ages, sex and breed.

The colt is in perfect health, I watch his diet very carefully and his
protein is 10.85%, made up of Hominy Chop at 60% (a maize derivative,
the husks of the maize pip), chopped lucerne at 30% and molasses meal
at 10%. Total weight of each meal is 2.5kg with a DE of 30MJ per meal
(needs 29 for his age). He was dewormed end of January and has free
access to water and hay and isn't stabled.

I'm totally baffled about this!

Thanks all
Kristene
