Re: [RC] To breed or not to breed - Heidi Smith

SO: thoughts? pro's and cons? Am I crazy? How long is a brood
mare 'out of commission' when pregnent and with foal at side?
Is it feasible to pony a un-weaned foal on the trail (not at
rides, just pleasure riding)? For those of you who breed, what
are the pluses and minuses? What do you 'get out of it'?

As for this part of it--yes, you are crazy! But it IS interesting to breed
your own. As for broodmares being out of commission--you can ride lightly
nearly up to foaling, provided the mare is comfortable. I've
endurance-riden up to 7-1/2 months, but at that point, the baby was coming
far enough forward to make the mare a tad uncomfortable going down steep
hills. But then that's a far cry from hopping on and walking a few miles
down the road. She will be more out of commission nursing baby--while she
is certainly ABLE to be ridden at that time, unless you have a completely
safe place to ride where you are isolated, I would NOT advise taking baby
along. Too many things can happen.
