Re: [RC] putting down a horse - Susan Garlinghouse

asked me to step back, he administered the shot (which he told me was a
massive tranquilizer overdose) and the horse fell to the ground dead
instantly. Don't they use that method anymore?

Dyane

They use both. If the owner wants to be present, then usually a sedative
like xylazine is given first, so that when the euthanasia solution is
administered, the horse just slips to the ground. If the owner is not
there, and the jugular vein is in good shape, and the horse isn't
unapproachable or wild, then at CSU we usually just go straight for the
euthanasia solution. There's no difference in quality of death for the
animal, but occasionally, the euthanasia solution causes a horse to jerk or
rear over backwards in reaction to the chemical. The brain is already dead
at that point, but it's more upsetting for the owner than seeing the gentle
slump. Both methods are equally humane, however.
