One more farrier's opinion . . .

My farrier - a CJF - believes in leaving whatever you can.  The only
things he takes off are a) hanging pieces of frog that are coming loose
as part of the frog's natural shedding process, b) a little frog inside
the sulci to widen the opening and allow a hoof pick to get all the way
to the bottom and improve cleaning (i.e. prevent nasty things breeding
in there), and c) some sole around the web of the shoe where the wall
will be shortened in trimming because "aside from a high nail, the
primary cause of lameness after shoeing is sole pressure".
