Re: Big Trot

Hi Susan -

The way I understood from my vet was windpuffs not a big deal in and of
themselves, but additional filling along the tendon sheath is definately an
indicator of too much stress. Also some horses are predisposed to windpuffs,
but I did read somewhere (I hate it when I can't remember the "where") that
there has not been any research proving support boots solve anything other
than external dings.

Seems to me they could restrict the downward movement of the fetlock joint &
if that is the cause of the filling then they would be helpful (although I am
working with them at the moment I am still on the fence as to whether they
help or hinder). But as Bob Morris brought up, then it seems that you take
away the support & you could do more harm than good.

I did ride today, on the flat but was having a control issue so did lots of
moving of hips, shoulders & change of direction, & noticed additional filling
still considered windpuff but nevertheless there & had support boots on so
they did not prevent extra filling in this case. Imagine filling will be gone
in a.m. but makes you wonder if it is worth the effort & $.

My goal really is not to eliminate windpuffs, just to see if anything prevents
further damage. I agree with Bob about conditioning being the most important
consideration & support boots should not be in place of this. I guess the
jury is still out on this one.
