Re: [RC] Sole Guard - Karen Sullivan

What do you figure the cost is for one treatment?

I have used Keratex hoof harderner on a few of my horses with
excellent results...

Well, the hoof has to be completely dry when it it applied (which is a
challenge this time of year!). I prepped the hooves at the barn, but my gun
was full of old stuff, and I couldn't get it apart, so I went to the ride
with the intention of using boots. However, we managed to get the gun apart
in camp, and since my horse's hooves were still dry, I applied the SG. He
stepped in some poop with the last hind foot before I could get the SG on
it. I brushed it off and applied the SG to that last hoof, anyway (didn't
have heat gun in camp to dry it off).
Next day at the lunch check, all four feet still had the SG. After the
finish, I checked his feet, and three were still on, but that hind foot was
bare, but he was fine. The three hooves that were still covered lasted the
rest of the week at home.

I rode that 50 with the idea that if the SG all fell out, it wouldn't really
matter, because I know my horse does all his conditioning completely
barefoot (only using hoof protection for competitions), and he has completed
several 50s completely bare. The SG is just added insurance that a rock
won't wedge into the frog grooves and the sole is getting extra layer of
protection. The other 50 that I used SG, the sole part wore off some time
into the ride, but the grooves stayed full, which is mainly what I wanted.

So, to answer your question, yes, if you get a good application, it should
last the whole day. And even if it fell out half way through, that would
only leave only a few miles of bare hoof on the hind, and the ground is soft
this time of year.

To apply, wear old clothes and have your tips and plastic sheets pre-cut. I
had to use a new tip for each hoof, because the SG was solidifying inside
the tip before I could get to the next hoof. I use a small, low-power heat
gun ($25), which I think is also used for glue-on boots. After my other two
tubes of SG are used, I will probably go back to boots instead. Like Karen,
I don't like prepping the hooves.

Terry -
Thank you for your little blurb on Sole Guard. I bought some awhile
back but my mare was lame for a little while and didn't use it. She's
shod on fronts now, but I was going to use it on her bare rears for and
LD. So, you think it would hold up ok for an entire LD? If so, I'm
thrilled to hear that. I really hate to have her shod on the back too,
just to have them pulled after a ride.
Thanks, Carrie

called Sole Guard ("No shoes, no problem") worked for me on this Bar H
50. It is the second 50 we have completed using this product, and it has
its place for barefoot horses that have good feet to begin with, or the
trail has decent footing most of the day.
The application requires a thoroughly and completely dry hoof (hair
dryer or heat gun), but no denatured alcohol is required. It fills the
collateral groove and adds a layer of protection to the sole of the
hoof. It is all you need to get through a 1-day 50, but I wouldn't trust
it to stay in for a multi-day event."
