A hack is a term for a horse used for riding or driving. Came from the Hackney breed I believe. Or maybe the breed name came from the term hack.


Hacking is to ride or drive for transportation purposes, at an ordinary pace - not for sport, not racing, not jumping, not competing.

A hacker is basically an ordinary (non-sport) rider. There's no implication regarding skill in the word.
