[RC] euthanizing an old horse (opening a can of worms) - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

Nature had a cure for the slow death problem...it was called predators. Brutal
but swift. If I had the right I know of two horses within 5 miles of me I would
put down right now. One is a pony that has gone from fat to a skeleton with a
hide stretched over it in the last year. It's owned by a prominent small animal
vet. I've been watching it waste away and am amazed he doesn't have the decency
to put the thing out of its misery rather than let it starve to death from
whatever is wrong with it. (there is pasture and other herdmates look fine).

The other has chronic navicular disease and its owner spends tons of money
treating him with MSM, glucosamine, accupuncture, etc. He has to live in a
muzzle 24/7 and barely gets a double handful a day but maintains his weight.
It's got to be a horrible life though they're spending tons of money to let him
"enjoy" more years. :-(

The old fellow I'm helping is still questionable. He's limping around OK with 4
bute tabs a day but don't know what will happen when it stops. His herdmate
mare suddenly came in today with two runny eyes, one blinking as if very
irritated and a swollen jaw (possible tooth problem)? They're 29. Winter is
coming on. The owner is at a crossroads I'd say...this vet isn't the best for
figuring things out and he may just start throwing good money after bad if he
tries to figure it all out. If there were wolves & cougars out there I'm sure
they'd end it for them pretty soon. What if it were Kaboot? Oh, that makes it
a much bigger dilemma for me. Easier to see clearly on someone else's horse.
