[RC] Thoughts on proposed treament insurance - Lynn White

I have a fundamental issue with the proposed added fee for “emergency
treatment” insurance. This sounds like a good idea on the surface, but has
anyone considered the thought that having this fund might actually result in
riders putting their horses at greater risk?

I would wager that we’d see a select group of riders continually dipping into
this fund. I do not wish to subsidize the attitude of “I can ride like hell
because there is a fund to help me pay for a vet to treat my sick horse.” I
don’t like to see horses suffer, but harm usually comes dressed as good
intentions.

My philosophy on endurance riding and horse ownership goes like this:

If you can’t afford or don’t want to pay for a vet to treat your horses,
either ride in a less risky manner or find another horse sport. If you don’t
have a rainy day fund in a savings account set aside for an equine emergency
you should not have a horse.

If we try to idiot proof our sport we’ll just end up with a sport full of
idiots.

Lynn
