[RC] Bird: TWH prospects - rides2far@xxxxxxxx

For the record though, on my first attempt 2 yrs ago I ran out of
Horse, not Time. On the 2nd effort I ran out of Time. 3rd time's a charm! As
a matter
of fact, if you want to read the sad start of our career, that 1st Skymont
story is in
the ride stories archive here:
http://feeds.endurance.net/stories/2007/11/susans-skymont-s
tory.html We've come a long >>>>>>way, baby! :)

Nobody talks that much about slow twitch, fast twitch, and the "in between that
can
be trained to go either way" muscles that I read about when I started doing
endurance on an Appaloosa, but Susan's experience with Bird sort of brings it
back to the
forefront. If I recall correctly an Arab was born with up to 40% slow twitch.
Western breeds closer to 5% slow twitch but there's a much larger percentage of
"can go both ways" muscles that could be trained to switch to anaerobic with
work.

I believe what took time with Bird was training those "in between type"
muscles to be slow twitch. When I rode an Appaloosa I asked another prominent
rider
about an Appaloosa who was doing 100's. His comment was, "He's a good horse,
but it
takes a lot of riding to make him fit". That was my experience with non-Arab
breeds...it took more riding, which was OK, except that I would lame them with
all the
riding. If a TWH or any other breed stays sound with all the riding it takes
to train
those muscles to be aerobic, then you've got a horse that's good to go and do
some
endurance. :-) I think what Susan perceived as doubt from Guy & others over
Bird's breed
was actually more doubt over his tendency to be an air fern and hold too much
weight. He
could have been a QH, App or Arab and his weight still would have been the
issue. The
beauty of it is she didn't starve the weight off, she just rode him until his
metabolism
revved up enough to take care of it. Great job!
