RE: [RC] award???? - Mary Visco

I agree Barbara, In the "old days" we really looked forward to the dinner,
socializing and award ceremonies. It felt like we were a community not just
a bunch of people going to a ride. I still remember many fun and touching
moments from those evenings and I still have some awards that mean a lot to
me every time I look at them or use them. If we lived far from the ride we
would spend the night and see everyone again in the am. Mary

I can recall a time when the award for either first or BC (can't remember
which) was a beautiful cantle pack from a well-known business. The winner
came up to receive the award, and instead of looking pleased or excited, she

looked at it as if it was a dead animal and finally, reluctantly, took it.
THAT'S depressing, especially in view of the pack being a donation.
The part of ride management I hate the worst is people loading up horses
right after the ride or leaving in the middle of the awards dinner while I'm

trying to be "Santa Claus", as Angie puts it. I have been told that riders
have a long drive home, and all that stuff, but it makes me feel that if we
were ever to put on another 50 miler, we would just arrange to pass out
awards as soon as we knew the riders had passed the post-ride check and not
have a dinner at all. It would be less expensive all the way around and a
lot less trouble and disappointment on our part. There's nothing quite so
upsetting as putting on a "party" and having people leave either before it
or in the middle, in a great cloud of noise and dust. Whatever happened to
the camaraderie of rides of the past?

Barbara

Actually, I appreciated somebody actually acting like they *wanted* an
award. When everybody else is being above it all and saying, "Couldn't care
less" "Pay no attention" "Means nothing" it's kinda depressing when you
spend a lot of time & money picking out what you're going to give them.
Being ride manager is like getting to be Santa Clause! :-))
