[RC] Pros & Cons of 30 vs 60 minutes at finish - Diane Trefethen

(these are comments I've heard so far)

Pro-
1. standardize rules for EN and LD
2. standardize re FEI and other countries
Recovery to 60pbm in 30 minutes is NOT in line with FEI; they require 64bpm. So scratch this one.
3. disincentivize racing to finish
This is only partially true, ie, for people vying for 1st and 10th and people who are silly enough to race for 43rd.
4. identify horses with elevated pulses 30 minutes after finish

Con -
1. logistical (time) difficulties of dealing with finish line distanced from vet area
2. 'hassle' for riders of rushing after the ride
3. change from norm
4. encourage over-aggressive cooling to reduce HR more rapidly
5. encourage RM's to move finish line closer to PR area

Con
ONLY *identifies* horses with elevated pulses (see Pro "identify horses with elevated pulses 30 minutes after finish")

Riders whose horses have been dq'd can't be forced to stay in camp

There is no treatment for horses with a slightly elevated pulse

No stats on the number of horses who crash after pulsing in 30 minutes vs 31-60 minutes

DQ is based on percentage of horses in "dire straits" who have elevated pulses, not percentage of horses with elevated pulses who wind up in dire straits. This is backwards.

Relies too heavily on pulse, ie, easy to dq horses with all A's & B's
