[RC] Question on Knees - Martha Clausen

Dear list members...my name is Martha and I am a lurker.  I have a member of this list for quite a while, and love it ... I live out my riding fantasies with all of you.

I have a lovely mare, Sadie, who is a Tennessee Walker and I have not been able to ride her for over a year, as I have a really bad knee issue.

I finally went back to a different orthopedist here in Boise, Idaho where I live, out of Intermountain Orthopedic, Dr. Colin Poole, who understands that I want to get back into riding..my knee issue is this.  I had a total knee replaced 7 years ago in April. My body is rejecting the implant, and it hurts and is incredibly unstable. (I hear and feel it wiggling around in my leg.  I sometimes wear a Donjoy Player knee brace, but after that has been on for a couple of hours, my knee is so unhappy that I have to take it off.  My idiotibial band has been screaming at me for over 3 years.  .  Dr. Poole had me get a bone scan done, at St. Luke's and I have no infection...that was back in March of this year.

Anyway, long story short...has anyone come back to ride distances after having a total knee redone?  I am a tough girl, having had a boatload of surgeries, in my younger days and most folks don't even know I have any problems, as I hide it really well...but I do want to be realistic.  I am 52 years young, 12 years old mentally, and so want to ride Sadie, and get us both conditioned to ride distances...but am I kidding myself?

I am scheduled to have surgery sometime after January...not a cemented date yet..I am on two pain meds, Vicodin and Ultra and a muscle relaxer so that the idiotibilal band can possibly calm down.

Private replies are great...my back has been fused for over 30 years due to idiopathic scoliosis, and I am not  a stranger to pain....I love riding Sadie, my back always feels so much better and we graduated from Western to English and I also want to try my hand at dressage as my balance is really good.

Hugs...Martha Clausen
