[RC] Question on ACL injuries - Elizabeth Walker

Has anybody out there had surgery for a torn ACL?

Back in April, I came off Caisson, and twisted my knee while doing so. In May, I got a cortisone injection and was told to get an MRI if things didn't go back to normal. So - this month, I got an MRI, and the doctor called to say that it looks as if I have a torn ACL, as well as possibly some other things going on. I have an appointment with the orthopedist in 2 weeks.

Right now - the knee has a bit of swelling which I can feel if I try to do a deep knee bend. It is also a little painful when I try to cue with that leg. That leg is not as strong for dealing with spooks, and I need to be careful when mounting. I don't think I could mount from the ground right now, as the ligaments at the back of the knee have something going on, too. It will occasionally 'catch', but I've only had it try to 'give out' once. I can walk normally. For straight- ahead trail riding, I have no problems.

I'm interested in hearing whether anyone with ACL injuries had surgery, or decided not to have surgery. I'm not looking forward to 6 months of no riding, should I decide on the surgical route, especially if the improvement is only marginal.

Thanks for any opinions. :)
