The other thing you can do is pour a little bleach into the water (i.e. 
chlorinate it) every now and then.? It will kill the mosquito larvae and burn 
off in short order.? Don't use the lemon scented stuff though.

However, unless you are going to do it for all the water troughs on the 
property, there isn't much point.? Killing off the mosquitos breeding in one 
water trough out of 15 does nothing much to reduce the mosquito breeding.
