FW: [RC] Following on from the Mongol Derby... - Mike SherrellI got some belly laughs out of this, but one line made me think: "the outlaw equestrian traveller who nearly killed his horses on his mad dash from Russia to Paris." In "Crusader, by Horse to Jerusalem", Tim Severin and a companion ride and pack on four horses from France to Israel in the 1980s. They move at a placid pace, mostly a walk, and seem very careful. They leave one horse off half way because they can see that it won't survive the heat further east and south, and another horse dies unexpectedly, something like cholic but in a place where they couldn't do an autopsy. They comment about how many of the original crusaders' horses died en route.
