Re: [RC] The warning to Mongol Riders - k s swigart - Dot Wiggins

Having often spent some long days, and day after day for some weeks, I know a little about keeping on keeping on, as the saying goes.

Even if some of these riders are all gung ho at the start they will soon get over it. It's one thing to blast out for 25 miles on the first horse, and then the next one, and the next. After the first 75 miles, which will probably take, at the best, a long day under the likely conditions, the bloom will be off. Reality will take over and just getting over the ground will become a good thing. Even if the horses are fresh at each 25 mile point the riders won't be very long.
It's one thing to go 100 miles, or 50, on a fit horse you know well, quite another to work your way on a strange horse of unknown training and conditioning. Whole nother ball game.

I wish them well, horses and riders both. Actually, I'm betting on the horses to be able to take care of themselves, they are survivors in their own element.

Dot

Maybe not all, but we have heard of riders who go to their first AERC ride who over ride their horses because the competition aspect kicks in, and they do not think clearly about the safety and welfare of their OWN horse. Shoot, even experienced riders can still do that, when caught in the competition aspect. At least we have vets at the rides who have a clue how to handle these situations for the most part, and treat the horses, even with the riders have "mistreated" them. (although dang it, the vets job is not to have to fix our flipping mistakes)
