[RC] Windpuffs gone bad - k s swigart

Liz Carey said:

My question to the RideCamp Chorus is:?? anybody out
?there had any experience like this? Any other hypotheses
?as to what could be going on besides a "windpuff gone bad"?

Well...my "experience" with flexion tests is that a positive flexion test is an
indication of some kind of JOINT damage not of tendon damage.

We have yet to do x-rays to see if there might be a bone
?chip floating around in that ankle; but she isn't really lame
?enough to indicate a fracture.?

So, given that a flexion test of the ankle joint is positive and that there is
swelling around the ankle joint, x-rays is where I would go, but it wouldn't be
to look necessarily for a chip (although I suppose that might be possible), but
rather to look for the extent of any permanent damage to the cartilege caused
by the arthritis (joint swelling) that is going on, and has been for quite a
while now.

Also, after having drained the swelling, I would try wrapping the location to
see if pressure could keep the swelling out and would ask my vet if
anti-inflammatories were indicated to also keep the swelling out until, if it
isn't permanent cartilege deterioration, the injury that caused the swelling
could heal and maybe keep the swelling away permanently.

It has always been my understanding that "windpuffs" are only benign if they
are old (and, in fact, if they aren't old, then I didn't think they were called
windpuffs).? And that new swelling in/around the fetlock area is not to be
dismissed, but rather to be taken as an indication of some kind of injury which
should be investigated and treated accordingly.
