I have pulled a custom made 4 horse stock type trailer since 1991. It was made ~2' longer than a usual 4 horse so I can haul two horses and a buggy. It is completely stable.

I don't think your informant is right. There is no reason for a longer trailer to be unstable, they are just longer and take up more room. Bumper pulls do not even cut corners like goosenecks and thus are easier to drive.
