Re: [RC] preventing soreness from stirrup leathers? - Kathy Mayeda

I have short fat calves. Half chaps can help, but there were a couple
of times in my early career that I was wearing half-chaps and it
didn't help because the way I was balanced in the saddle. I used the
suede/velcro cheepy things and they fit okay. Stirrup leather covers
absolutely drove me crazy and I used them only once before I gave them
away. But like everything else, that's just my experience. I also
don't like fleece saddle covers.

I had to learn to not hold hardly any tension in my legs, but you can
only do that if you can find your balance in the saddle, otherwise
your tendency is to brace, and you'll brace against the stirrup
leathers. I think a lot of my early shin rubbing was just shear
tension in my body from doing my first endurance rides before I got my
comfy ReactorPanel saddle.

Also make sure that your stirrups are facing the right direction. If
they are backward they will bite into your legs more. And don't ask
me which way is backwards because I have a set of stirrups that I find
more comfortable riding "backwards"!

Wanted to pass this along just in case it helps anyone -

I use webbers with easy ride stirrups in cages, but I've used LOTS of
different set ups.? I've always worn half chaps, but I've been wanted to get
off and run more.? My solution?? cut a long neoprene tail wrap in half and
use that.? Cheaper than sheep skin and pretty to boot!? Haven't tried it in
an actual ride - just training rides.? So far so good.? I can tell that it's
not going to work as well as half chaps, but if it works "well enough" I'll
be good to go.? If not, I will have wasted (let me see....I got the tail
wrap used....) I think a whole $2!

I should have pics on my blog if anyone is confused about exactly what I
did.

Melinda

I've had this issue as well and would be interested in some suggestions.? I
can move mine also.? I may just resort to fenders.? I've got sheepskin on
them already and I can't wear halfchaps as I have short, fat calves and
nothing fits!
