RE: [RC] re: Folsom Lake accident - Rae Callaway

I've got to agree with that. A group of us got caught on the Sam Houston
Forest dirt bike trails when there was a race going on and were racing to
get off the their trails (had a couple miles to go to an intersection).
They came at us in groups of 8 and we would leap off the trail when we heard
them. Had to wave on quite a few groups that would slow down when they saw
us since it was our mistake, their trails and a competition! Turned out to
be great training for my then 3 year old gelding. He learned to leap off
the trail when a dirt bike came up behind us and would then charge after
them when they passed. It became quite a game for him. He's 10 now and has
no fear of dirt bikes at all (unlike his dam, who is fearless with
everything but dirt bikes are EVIL!)

What a horrible, tragic, unnecessary accident! I am so sad. However,
I do want to state to ride camp that the vast majority of
motorcyclists are NOT like this. Most that I know, slow down or even
stop or cut their motor when they come up on horses. So much of it is
education, like everything in life. One proactive thing horse people
can do is ask to speak at off road motorcycle club meetings about how
motorcyclists should interact with animals on trails. This is an
opportunity to do good PR. There are "bad apples" in every sport,
including ours. Anyhow, just remember that all hunters aren't fat,
bumbling, drunkards and all southern women don't have big hair and a
low IQ (hi, Angie and Jody:) and all off-road motorcyclists are not
jerks. Cindy
