Re: [RC] Polo Ponies/Biodyl - rides2far@xxxxxxxx/carrie - Elizabeth Walker

No one has actually determined that it was the selenium that was the cause. Could have been one of the other ingredients, or a contaminant. The toxicology tests haven't come back, so even the speculation that the cause was the injection is just that -- speculation. Though I will grant that, since only those horses injected came down sick, it is a pretty good place to start looking.

I had asked Susan Garlinghouse about this once and her response was that
the typical dosage on the average supplement container for Se is far
less than the horse may actually need or can tolerate. She was alluding

daily supplement. Platinum Performance has a great Selenium supplement
and the scoop in it is incredibly tiny, but I double the dose during
high exercise periods according to what Susan stated was acceptable and
safe. I'm not sure why these polo ponies were injected either when
there are safer oral alternatives. Seems very risky to me. Now look
where they are, case in point. I would love to know where they obtained
their Se injectables from.

Bad sign, replying to my own post. I looked again and apparently that is
the
standard disclaimer that I quoted. Looks like it's a selenium
supplement.
Considering that selenium is toxic in large doses and that the
directions limit
how often it can be given I wonder what the advantage was to inject
rather than
simply supply the supplement orally.
