Kat, below is the description for the bit. It does require a person to be aware 
of their hands...in other words, not heavy handed.

"Usage/Solution for: this bit allows the rider to isolate one side of the bit 
to lift a shoulder and to reward the horse with a "comfort zone" when relaxed 
at the poll. It is a good bit for collection and stopping, as well as for 
spoiled horses, horses which run through the bit and those which drop a 
shoulder."
