I know it *has* happened...but I can't help but think people are less likely to bring a horse they know may  be getting over something or coming down with something to an endurance ride than they would a show. I think it also helps that we don't use barns where they're sniffing each other through the bars.
 
I went to a  very few shows & group trail rides when I was a kid and at one my horses caught a nasty bug that had me giving antibiotic shots to everybody in my barn. In 21 years of endurance riding I've never had that happen.
