[RC] Help: My mare is eating water hemlock - Lynn White

Be prepared to use chemicals!

The best advice is for you go go down to your local
agricultural agency and ask them the best "cocktail"
to use. Dig up a plant in question root and all WITH
GLOVES and take in a sample for them. Only answer the
questions that they ask and don't give them too much
info on your place. The reason I say this is that some
agencies will go to you place and treat the area and
give you the bill, especially if your neighbors know
about it and complain. They might just come by and
make sure you are treating it though. This is a
serious plant like Tansy Ragwort. The agency I work
for is very aggresive about erradicating this plant.

You will probably need to cordon the area off to make
sure your horse stays out of it, and there are likely
dormant seeds that will sprout next spring or
whenever.

You can also just use a double strong cocktail of
Round-up and 2-4-D. You will need to re-seed with
pasture grass within a couple days because this
cocktail kills everything. It's likely you will still
need to hand-dig up all the roots, but that kind of
info you can get from your agency. You do have a
time consuming project if you indeed have this nasty
plant. There's no magic easy way to get rid of
noxious/toxic weeds. You just have to get obsessed
with it and get it all killed.
